Something a bit different to pass through the workshop recently was a bit of Mountain Bike history. John Cockrem rode the original Karapoti Classic in 1986 on his 1983 Specialized Stumpjumer. It is still in mint condition and he commutes around town on it virtually every day. It is one of only 3 known examples in original conditon in New Zealand.
Proud Owner John Cockrem with his '83 Stumpjumper and Specialized enthusiast Steve Pedley of Crank It Cycles
It boasted the following top-of-the-line specs:
- Suntour 15-speed drivetrain (no indexing)
- Five-finger motorcross -style brake levers
- Original cantilever brakes
- Bull Moose handle bars
A far cry from the fully-suspended or carbon hard tail bikes people attempt the event on these days!
