A common comment in the shop, but there are reasons and factors to bear in mind when buying online. You get what you pay for - read on...
Things are not always what they seem
Take tyres for example. Most on line retailers source their tyres from manufacturers' excess stock. Tyres that come on new bikes are usually look-alikes and inferior to after market tyres.
Cycle shorts online are tempting, but they usually have fewer panels and are a cheap cut, meaning they don't fit as well, and the pad (chamois) may not be as good. And then if they are the wrong size, you either have to pay for freight to return them, put up with it or sell them online yourself!
Also, be aware that Torpedo7 are being investigated by the Commerce Commission for misleading pricing. In a nutshell the adverstised prices are allegedly inflated to make their deals seem more attractive.
What about the warranty?
Yeah, right!
Customers come in occasionally complaining that on line sellers either never return their e-mails on warranty matters or reject warranty claims. While we cannot guarantee a warranty claim will be accepted, most of our suppliers have reps who visit regularly or are a friendly phone call away. This sort of service costs, so the NZ wholesalers deserve their cut.
Most NZ wholesalers will not warranty anything that has not been bought through normal retail channels. If you buy a suspension fork from Torpedo7 for example, the serial sticker will be removed or the serial number ground off. This is to conceal the dodgy channels through which they acquire their stock. Because of this, they have to warranty stuff themselves. Starting to get the picture?
Nasty surprises
Sometimes freight can end up being more than expected and if purchasing overseas, you'll get a call from a customs agent asking for GST on your purchase. Any new goods brought into NZ are legally required to have GST paid on them but Customs only police it for higher cost items. However with the prevalence of mail ordering, they are becoming more vigilant.
Buy Local
Every dollar is a vote, and if you vote locally the local economy prospers. Local businesses employ local people who spend their income locally. That in turn means the community (including you!) enjoys better service overall from all providers and it helps to keep you and your family in jobs. What goes around comes around...
