We'll it's been a busy month! We started with the cancellation of the Karapoti Classic, then the re-run two weeks later. Read all about that in Steve's article below.
On the same weekend the Taupo Iron Man was postponed and shortened.
Since then we've had staff and customers taking part in the Bush Tour road ride, a local favourite; the Motutapu Mountain Bike; and coming soon are The Auckland Half Ironman and The Rotorua Flyer.
The next big local event is the Country Road Classic, our road ride in the Bike NZ Summer Series of Cycling. It's a full length classic 160km (100 mile) event, the Apiti Loop with a few extra km's thrown in. It can be done as an individual or a team relay. Last year's inaugural event was fun, don't miss it this time!
After being cancelled for the first time in 26 years due to severe weather, New Zealand's biggest mountain bike race, The Karapoti Classic, was held on Sunday March 18. To see why it was cancelled, see this clip by Phil on You Tube and compare it to my photos later.
I was really happy that the organisers were able to re-schedule the event, as I had put in some hard work to get myself in good shape. My goal was to crack the elusive sub-3 hour mark, which is the goal for most competitors. The Sub-3 club has around 600 members, from around 16,000 people that have completed Karapoti since 1986. I have 5 sub three times already, but have set myself the goal of 10 before I am finished with this event. Every year I get older, it gets harder to achieve....
So, race day dawned fine, and no chance of rain! Awesome. However, I had a feeling that all of the rain 2 weeks ago may have done some damage.
Great spec, ready for any ride including Round Taupo! Full Ultegra groupset and DT Swiss Axis 3.0 wheelset. Was $5999, now only $3750! Suits a rider 183-191cm (6'0"-6'3").See the Specialized NZ Website for full specs (note image is wrong on their site.)
