Nic Leary wins XTerra! PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 20 April 2009 21:41

Last weekend (Saturday 18th April) saw Nic Leary pick up her first Xterra win. A determined, gutsy athlete, those who know her knew it was just a matter of time before she achieved her goal. Her win overshadowed partner Cabin's creditable 3rd placing, adding another podium finish to a good season. What follows is Nic's report on the event, which says it all:

Nic-XTERRA_Trophy"Saturday was a very enjoyable day for me at XTERRA NZ held at Blue Lake, Rotorua. I picked up my first NZ title, winning the pro-women's race by over 2 minutes from Susie Wood (Nelson) & Annika Smail (Rotorua).

"I had a plan and executed it well. It was largely built around my escalating form on the mountain bike, which is my focus this year

Moonride or Mudride? PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 14 May 2008 01:42

Manawatu teams again made the podium at last weekend's Moonride in Rotorua. In the 24-hour team event the "Jill@ReMax K-Loop Krusties" came second in the Older Dudes category and 3rd overall. Local Juniors "Nutz on Wheelz" came third in their category in the 12 hour event and a creditable 6th overall.

The K-Loop Krusties include Crank It's Phil Etheridge and other Manawtu Mountain Bike Club riders Gary Hall, David Bishop, Mike Kelly and Barry Jowett. The K-Loop Krusties acknowledge the support of Jill Meyer of ReMax Real Estate and Crank It Cycles.

It was a tough event, despite the course being shortened, with atrocious conditions for the first 8 hours from 10pm Friday. As Saturday dawned and the rain subsided, conditions improved, but large boggy areas remained. The bike wash facilities at the venue had a queue for about 10 riders for the entire 24 hours.

Nutz on Wheelz comprised Jamis-sponsored rider Matthew Waghorn, Crank It Cycles sponsored Aidan Terpstra, Campbell Tannock, and Dominic Furkert. All are members of the Manawatu Mt Bike Club Junior Development Squad.

Several other Manawatu teams participated in the 24- and 12-hour events.

More details and results at the Moonride website

Keep tuned for photos.

Crank It Mountain Bikers on the National Podiums PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 April 2008 15:21

In a weekend of stellar performances, Manawatu Mountain Bikers, all of whom are associated with Crank It Cycles, took out podium places at the Rotorua XTerra event and the National Secondary School Champs at Levin.

At XTerra Mark "Cabin" Leishman had the "race of his career" (so far) to come a close second to Auckland Pro Terrenzo Bozzone. Nic Leary, a recent addition to the Jamis sponsored rider ranks on her Dakar XCR Expert, came 3rd in the Elite women's event. Read more about it here: http://www.vorb.org.nz/article-77281.html

At the National Secondary School Champs, two Feilding AHS students, Matthew Waghorn, astride his new sponsored bike - a Jamis Dakar XCR Pro, and Keryn Knight gained podium places in the Under 15 Boys and Under 14 Girls respectively. Matthew was 2nd in the XC and 3rd in the Hill Climb, and Keryn was 3rd in the XC. Creditable performances were also notched up by Campbell Tannock and Aidan Terpstra (both on Giant bikes.)

It’s worth noting that all these riders are Cabin’s protégés, being part of the Manawatu Mountain Bike Club’s Junior Development Squad.

All in all, to paraphrase Cabin, not bad for a small shop.

Cabin's New Ride PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 February 2008 04:50

Following the demise of his old team, and his move to concentrate on the off road XTerra discipline, Cabin has secured sponsorship from Gary Fisher bicycles and chosen a Superfly carbon hard tail 29er.

As a competent technical rider, Cabin reckons 29ers are ideal for the sort of events he does and the Superfly satisfies his desire for a light bike. Weighing in at 10.6kg complete with pedals, he expects to have it under 10kg once he's given it his "treatment".

He finds 29ers "... carry speed so well and are very comfortable and stable at high speed. Over a race distance, because of those factors and the mellow style required there is less fatigue. I reckon in XTERRA I could probably come off the 29er with a whole lot less stress in my lower back and could subsequently run a whole lot better compared to the same course on a 26 inch wheel bike."

To prove his point, he won both the recent Wild Moa triathlon and Matarangi Intrigue events, breaking the course records in the process!

Crank It Rider 3rd in Round Taupo PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 25 November 2007 05:43

Crank It Cycles part timer and NZ Representative James Dobson placed 3rd in the Lake Taupo Classic race held on Saturday. This was a very creditable effort from James, who has been building up following a break due to illness. We're all proud of his acheivement, done wearing a Crank It jersey and riding a Trek Madone 6.5 supplied by Crank It Cycles and Trek Bicycles NZ.

Perfect riding conditions saw an in-form Gordon McCauley take first place in the 160 kilometre classic race with Jeremy Yates second and James third. James also took the prize for the first under-23 rider home.
