Thermo fitting is not essential and many owners do not have it done, as the shoes are very comfortable off the shelf.

Thermo-fit shoes are ideal for people who have wide feet or bunions or bumps on the base or side of their foot. The thermal fit takes away the pressure points making for a comfortable, numbness-free ride. Shimano's is a two-stage process whereby the sole and upper are moulded separately, and the upper is vacuum formed around the foot. This acheives a better fit and is less prone to error than other DYI (in a domestic oven) systems. The thermo fitting usually costs $50, including oven/pump hire and the plastic bags used in the fitting process.
