"Break the Rules!" -a story of defiance and unhindered innovation, let loose from a governing body tied to tradition.
Specialized's lightest road bike offering that tips the scales as the world's lightest production disc-brake road frame. Point the Aethos at your favourite climb whether it be Maungawhau Mt Eden, Twilight Road Clevedon or Senic Drive Waitakere. Don't be surprised when the Aethos holds its own on the snaking descent, rough chip or letterbox sprint too.
In the Aethos, Specialized has embarked on their most ambitious and thorough supercomputer derived, simulation project in the company's history. A staggering 100,000 iterations of virtual frame designs focusing on bottom-bracket stiffness, front end stiffness and overall stiffness. Specialized has departed (albeit subtly) from traditional tube shapes. Most notably, the existing understanding was that stiffness is built upon pairing a big, bolstered downtube with a big, bottom bracket. Think again! Peter Denk, Aethos' Engineering Lead, along with his team have delivered stiffness more efficiently than any frame before. In short, a smaller diameter bottom bracket tubes and tubes at the seat cluster (below the seat post collar), larger diameter top tube and down tube to pair to the larger head tube, how the top tube and down tube taper to the bottom bracket and seat cluster. All these combined elements, bring about the blend we're starting to catch wind of.
Tethered to the nth degree to ride quality, the weight of a partially filled water bottle and timeless aesthetics, the Aethos emerges as the cream of the crop. Across the most sought after characteristics known to the most premium road bikes, there's a new name in town. Delve deeper into the Aethos' industry-leading design innovation.
Weighing 699 grams for this 10R Fact carbon frame in size 56cm (585g in the 12R S-Works model), this Aethos frame is the lightest production disc road bike frame on Earth.
While setting a new standard in regards to frame weights, by no means is this bike purposed to be hung on the mantlepiece for art and ornamental expression! The bike can accomodate tyres up to 32mm wide, just like the SL7 Tarmac. Nudging right up to the recommended maximum tyre width will go some way to transforming the Aethos (from the climbing feather or fast race bike -that it is!) into a comfortable, compliant road bike you can enjoy riding from dawn to dusk. Paired with components such a the Roval Terra seat post (with 18mm of vertical compliance) and Specialized's carbon Hover handlebars, we find ourselves with an avant-guarde climbing bike, with disc brakes, all while riding in comfort. The future is now!
Every additional component that makes up a frameset, from the derailleur hangers to the fork expander plug have been designed with style, weight, and durability in mind. Built with Roval's new featherweight 136g 'Alpinist' carbon seat post, other additional upgrades (like the one-piece 'Alpinist' handlebar/stem) are waiting down the line once you cash in your children's outgrown Lego set on Trademe.
SRAM Force eTap 12-speed AXS powers the shifting and top-shelf SRAM Red brakes adorn this Pro model. With no gearing wires, only the hydraulic brake cables from the shifters appear on an otherwise Feng Shui simplicity. Enjoying Roval's Alpinist CL carbon wheels weighing in at a scant 1365 grams, rotational weight is kept low. Foreign to some, however you may find yourself drawn to the hills. A SRAM Force AXS Power Meter and threaded bottom bracket come stock, industry learnings (years of refinement and PressFit humility) from real-time data and reliable function.
